GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter)
An outlet or breaker that shuts off power within milliseconds when it detects a ground fault — required in wet areas by code.
GFCIs are required by NEC in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, outdoor outlets, and unfinished basements. They're the electrical version of an instant fuse — much faster than a normal breaker, fast enough to prevent electrocution.
If a GFCI keeps tripping, the issue is almost always water intrusion or a downstream fault, not the GFCI itself.
